General Information:

Located in both inner North Canberra and Belconnen districts, Ginninderra Drive is a name associated with the area for many years, and formerly the name of a local parish; named after an Aboriginal word meaning 'sparkling' or 'throwing out little rays of light', apparently referring to the waters of the Ginninderra Creek. ¹

The route is mostly a divided road with 2 lanes in each direction between Mouat St and Tillyard, with the exception of the westbound carriageway between Mouat St and Gungahlin Dr, which is 3 lanes wide. Between Tillyard Dr and Kerrigan St it is mostly undivided with a single lane each way. The route provides access to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra Stadium, the University of Canberra and Belconnen Town Centre.

1974: Construction of the dual 185 m bridges and dam wall at the eastern reach of Lake Ginninderra and Ginninderra Creek. ²

October 1976: The first segment of Ginninderra Drive, connecting Lyneham with the new suburb of Evatt, opened to traffic. ³
