General Information:

B34 is a rural but important route linking the Cox Peninsula with Darwin and passes through mostly bushland areas and a handful of small towns and communities.

The road is named after the Cox Peninsula. The road was formerly known as Darwin River Road from the Stuart Highway to Tumbling Waters, the road was renamed after construction of bridge over Blackmore River, together with rest of road leading to Cox Peninsula. The Peninsula was named after Matthew Dillon Cox, who is regarded as the Territory's first pastoralist who applied for a lease over the peninsula in 1869, just after the establishment of Palmerston (Darwin). Cox's station / camp was on Talc Head. Cox died in the 1870s. ¹

26 August 1983: Cox Peninusla Road name gazetted. ¹

2005: Completion of the seal from the 58 km mark to the 67 km mark at Belyuen. At the time, the road was currently sealed up to the 53 km mark, and then from Belyuen onwards to Mandorah and Wagait. ²
