General Information:
A3 is a major route in eastern Queensland, connecting the Darling Downs region to the northern coastal regions of the state. it's also not connected to the M3 / A3 route in Brisbane.
It consists of mostly rural highway roadway, but passes through several of Queensland's important regional centres.
History:
- December 1963: New England Highway declared as State Highway 22 with the introduction of the Road Plan of Queensland classification system. 2
- December 2012: Work commenced widening and pavement repairs between the Eton Vale Bridge over Hodgson Creek and the Cambooya Connection Road, plus the junction of Cambooya Connection Road and New England Highway widened to include slip lanes on the approaches. 3
- 2020: Work commenced on the reconstruction of the intersection of Cunningham Hwy (NH15) and New England Hwy (A3) at 8-mile, north of Warwick. Works included alignment changes and an overpass carrying traffic southbound from A3 onto NH15.
- 2026: Work commenced on safety upgrades between Steele Rudd Road, East Greenmount, and the Cunningham Highway intersection at Eight Mile, located 12 km north of Warwick. Works included removing roadside hazards, flattening embankments, extending existing culverts, installing sloping headwalls, installing and upgrading guardrails, and adding raised reflective pavement markers, plus road widening at the Nobby Connection Road intersection and introducing a dedicated right-turn lane. 4
