General Information:
B27 links Adelaide's eastern suburbs with the Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty Ranges. In the metropolitan area, the route is very straight, but once in the Adelaide Hills, the route becomes quite steep and windy. B27 is mostly undivided and is a mix of 2 lanes or 4 lanes and services rural, residential, commercial and industrial zones. It also passes through large tracts of bushland conservation areas.
Old Norton Summit Road is named after Robert Norton, who arrived in South Australia in 1836 with the first European settlers. He built a house of logs and clay at the place that now bears his name and this was the first road that ascends Mount Lofty to his property at Norton's Summit. 2
History:
- April 1867: Construction of Deep Creek Bridge, Lobethal Rd, Basket Range. 3 4
- 1882: Trams commenced servicing Magill Rd, linking Magill with Adelaide CBD, the route terminated at the corner of Magill Rd and Penfold Rd. 5 6
- 1909: Tramline along Magill Rd converted to electric operation. 5
- 1912: The tram service on Magill Rd was extended to Norton Summit Road. 5
- November 1958: Adelaide's electric tramway system was replaced by buses, except for the route from Adelaide to Glenelg. 5
- 1992: Work commenced on restoration of Deep Creek Bridge, Basket Range. 4
- 1995: Work on restoration of Deep Creek Bridge, Basket Range, completed. 4
- January 2019: Work to relocate powerlines along Magill Road from Vine Street to Windsor Avenue commenced. 7
- 03 December 2022: Official opening of the Magill Village Project, which was a project that included streetscape improvements, plus additional pedestrian crossings, improved cycling lanes and disability access compliant footpaths, as well as new paving, landscaping, public art and street furniture. 8
