The route is named after John Horrocks who travelled through the area with his party in August 1846 during his ill-fated exploration of land north of Spencer Gulf. 1

- March 2008: Local council votes in favour to support the dual naming of the portion of Main North Road in the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council area to include the name 'Horrocks Highway'. 2
- March 2012: Work commences on upgrades at the junction of Main North Road (now Horrocks Highway) and Anama Lane and also Main North Road and Black Rock-Clare Road. 3
- September 2013: Completion of upgrades at the junction of Main North Road (now Horrocks Highway) and Anama Lane and also Main North Road and Black Rock-Clare Road. The redevelopment works included widening and resurfacing of the road, the installation of batters, drainage and protective safety barriers as well as tree removal where necessary. 4
