Located in Canberra's inner north at the base of Mount Ainslie, Campbell is one of the city's older suburbs, with streets named after defence personnel. ¹ The land on which the suburb stands was originally known as Duntroon. ²

Campbell is named after local pioneer Robert Campbell (1769–1846). Sydney's first merchant, Campbell was granted land on the then Limestone Plains as compensation for the loss of one of his ships while on government charter. In 1825, he built a homestead and named it Duntroon after the Campbell castle in Argyllshire, Scotland. Duntroon House is now part of the Royal Military College. ³

Other buildings erected by Robert Campbell and his family that are still standing include the Anglican Church of St John the Baptist (completed in 1845), Blundell's Farmhouse (now a pioneer museum), and Yarralumla House (completed in 1891), which is now the official residence of the Governor-General. ³
