Cobar
Cobar is a large town located between Dubbo and Broken Hill on the Barrier Highway. Copper was first discovered in the area in 1869 and mining started shortly afterwards. However, by the late 1910s the mine shut, the town declined and it wasnt until further mining investigations were undertaken in the late 1960s, that the town grew again. With the opening of a water channel from Nyngan, Cobar has evolved into a green oasis considering the dry, arid countryside it exists in. While mining is still the town's primary industry, it is also the main centre for the surrounding cattle and sheep stations. The Cobar area is part of the traditional territory of the Wongaibon people and the town name is derived from their dialect, meaning red ochre.
