Narrabri, lies in north-western NSW at the junction of the Newell and Kamilaroi Highways and on the banks of the Namoi River.

Settled in the mid 1850s, the town grew as a centre to the local farming industries which include cotton and sunflowers and more recently as an important stop for motorists due to the emerging importance of the Newell Highway. The town boomed in the 1890s upon the arrival of the railway line and again after World War 2 as the areas to the north were opened up to soldier re-settlement schemes.

Of interest in the area include the Pilliga Scrub (large reserve to the south), the Australian Telescope (23 km west which includes 5 telescopes situates on a 3km rail link from each other), Mt Kaputar National Park (20 km east features the prominent peaks of Mt Kaputar and Grattai Mountain) and Narrabri Lake (3 km south). The town name is of indigenous origin, meaning "forked waterways".
