Located west of the Darwin CBD, the suburb of Larrakeyah is named after the Larrakia people. They inhabited the area for thousands of years prior to European settlement, and are the traditional custodians of the land where the city of Darwin was built. ¹ The suburb was one of the first parts of the city to be developed.

The suburb was home to the region's first hospital in the late 1800s, with residential housing established in the early 1900s. In the current day, the suburb hosts Larrakeyah Barracks, a large Australian Defence Force base. The suburb also has several restaurants, a marina on Cullen Bay and is close to Mindil Beach and the nearby casino resort.
