Woolloongabba is an inner suburb of the Queensland capital city, Brisbane. The name of the suburb is derived from an Aboriginal expression, variously interpreted as referring to whirling waters, a fighting place or a wallaby. The first is the most likely as there was a chain of waterholes that flowed westerly through the present Brisbane Cricket Ground ending at One Mile Swamp at Clarence Corner (the corner of Stanley Street and Annerley Road). At flood times the waterholes may have been an inundated watercourse. ¹

The suburb is home to the Brisbane Cricket Ground (known colloquially as "The Gabba", and opened in 1896) ¹ and the Princes Alexandra Hospital. The suburb is served by several bus routes as well as the Cleveland railway line. In the past it was serviced by horse-drawn trams and later electric trams and trolleybuses. The suburb also held the main railway locomotive depot for railways lines south of the of the Brisbane River between 1884 and 1969.

In the early days of Woolloongabba, it played an important part in Brisbane's commercial and manufacturing history, with numerous shops and factories dotted through the suburb.
