Dirranbandi is the only sizeable town between St George and Lightning Ridge, sitting close to the QLD–NSW border on the Castlereagh Highway. It's located in south-west Queensland, surrounded by wide floodplains, and lies on the banks of the Balonne River. Agriculture, particularly cotton farming, is the town's main industry, with several large cotton fields in the area.

The town was surveyed in March 1885. Its name is believed to come from a local Aboriginal language, possibly meaning "broken forest country", "chorus of frogs at night", or "hairy caterpillars that move in single file".

In 1913, the Southern Railway was extended to Dirranbandi. The section of the line between Thallon and Dirranbandi remained in use until it was closed in 2010.
