Port Willunga is a semi-rural suburb on Adelaide's southern outskirts. Known as Wirruwarrungga or Ruwarunga by the Kaurna people, it is significant as the site of a freshwater spring said to have been created by the tears of Tjilbruke, the creator being.

Port Willunga Beach, with its golden cliffs, clear waters, white sands and the remains of the old jetty, is one of South Australia's most photographed beaches and a popular wedding venue.

The name Port Willunga was introduced in 1850, with the first wheat cargo loaded that February. Residents petitioned for a jetty in 1852, and construction began in 1853. Early exports included slate, flour, bran and hay. Proclaimed a port of export in 1856 and 1861, and of import and export in 1865, its commercial shipping ceased by the early 20th century. The jetty, often damaged by storms, was deemed beyond repair in 1915, yet locals continued to campaign for a replacement into the late 1920s.

Several shipwrecks occurred off Port Willunga, including the Cowry on 31 December 1887 and the Star of Greece on 12 July 1888.
