Birdwood is a town in the Adelaide Hills, originally settled by Prussians from around Züllichau. They named it Blumberg, likely after Groß Blumberg on the Oder River. In 1917, during World War I, the name was anglicised to Birdwood to honour General Sir William Birdwood, who led the ANZACs at Gallipoli.

European exploration of the district began in 1838, with settlers arriving in the 1840s. The town prospered quickly, and by the 1850s there was enough grain production to support the construction of the Blumberg Flour Mill, now home to the National Motor Museum. The Blumberg Inn was built in 1865 during the local gold rush.

Birdwood is the finishing point for the annual Bay to Birdwood vintage car run, which ends in a festival at the National Motor Museum. The museum was established in 1964.

Birdwood was once served by a station on the Mount Pleasant railway line, which was closed in 1963 due to poor profitability. Though the tracks are long gone, earthworks and a stone bridge near Mount Torrens still remain as reminders of the line.
