Meningie

Meningie, located along the Princes Highway between Tailem Bend and Kingston SE, is an attractive town that lies adjacent to the expansive Lake Albert. Settled in the 1860s, the town was initially a port for paddle-steamers crossing Lakes Albert and Alexandrina from Milang to shorten the overland travel time between Adelaide and Melbourne. By the time those operations wound down, the fishing industry from Lake Albert and the Coorong were prominent. Nowadays the town's key industries are fishing, dairying and crop growing as a result of significant irrigation. The town is in an ideal position for exploring the Coorong National Park region to the south, offers easy access for water activities on Lake Albert and provides a good range of amenities. The town's name is of Aboriginal origin meaning "mud".
