Located on the Princes Highway between Meningie and Kingston SE, Salt Creek is a small community that is named after a stream that flows through the locality on its way to the Coorong, adjacent to the Coorong National Park. The town consists of a few small hobby farms, plus larger agricultural operations and features a handful of shops, Country Fire Service building and holiday accommodation. The town also featured an Oil Rig Monument commemorating the failure of the search for oil in the area. Back in the 1890s a group of entrpreneurs mistook a compacted vegetable substance, now known as coorongite as evidence that there was oil to be found beneath the Coorong. This started an exploration project to hunt for oil, but they were not successful. ¹
