Tamania is located 240 km to the south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. The state comprises if the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. Just over 40% of the population resides in the Greater Hobart area, which forms the metropolitan area of the state capital and largest city, Hobart.
Tasmania was established in 1825 as Van Diemen's Land, however the island has been occupied by indigenous peoples for at least 30 000 years before British colonisation.
